The gems behind the Massif Central
The most precious treasures of the Poitou-Charentes region on the Bay of Biscay are not the white wines whose vines shape the landscape. Hidden in the medieval wine cellars, countless Cognacs mature in barrels made from oak from the neighbouring Limousin region. Those who are lucky enough to visit the cellars can even discover distillates put there in the 19th Century. Only double distillates made from the white wines of the growing regions in and around the Grande Champagne can be called Cognac. Cognac is largely distilled from Saint-Émilion during the winter months. The process has to be completed by the end of March, so that the storage period of the fresh double distillate can begin right on time on the first of April each year and older Cognacs are ready to drink. A great reason to invite your friends over for a Cognac dinner and live out the hospitable French dining culture together. A harmonious look for the table is crucial. The beautifully-shaped goblets made from fine crystal glass stand on a stable base with its typical short stem. Around the world in a crystal glass
Although only the double distillates from the region between the Île de Ré and La Roche-Chalais can be called Cognac, many other countries also have delicious brandies for connoisseurs to enjoy. If you cross the Pyrenees to Spain, you will find Europe's most traditional brandies. A Solera Gran Reserva matures for between eight and fifteen years to gain its often sweet, fruity notes. Cognac glasses in the Caucasus are also often filled with local brandy. In the South American countries of Peru and Chile, Pisco, a distillate similar to French Cognac made from grape must, is even the national drink.
