Germ-free surfaces in the bathroom

Cleaning the bathroom without chemicals with Villeroy & Boch

Which surfaces are antibacterial?

Some surfaces in the home are frequently touched by hands or come into contact with body fluids. This allows different kinds of bacteria to settle and potentially threaten our health. Completely germ-free surfaces in the bathroom are an ideal that is almost impossible to achieve, but with antibacterial surface technologies, we can come amazingly close to this goal. But which antimicrobial finishes are best, where should they be used and what should you consider when selecting and cleaning them?

Do antibacterial surfaces help?

  • Antibacterial finishes on tiles, floors or ceramics are designed to actively inhibit bacterial growth and prevent the spread of harmful germs. The high air humidity in the bathroom provides a very favourable environment for pathogens. Antibacterial surfaces in the bathroom can therefore significantly improve hygiene. It is important to consider the surface coating method as there can be significant differences.

  • A nanoparticle treatment, for example, can give surfaces antibacterial properties but these treatments are not regarded as entirely harmless: Experts warn of adverse effects on health should particles become detached from the finish. In comparison, Villeroy & Boch’s AntiBac surface finish technology is guaranteed safe for both the environment and health. The innovative glaze with silver ions has been shown to reduce bacterial growth by over 99.9 per cent and remains intact over the entire life span of the material. Many Villeroy & Boch washbasins and toilets feature the AntiBac technology and have exceptionally hygienic surfaces.

Bacteria hotspots in the bathroom

Some of the biggest germ hotspots in the home are in the bathroom. Microorganisms are often present on the washbasin, as well as on taps and fittings: We touch these areas with unwashed hands after using the toilet and they also come into contact with saliva when we brush our teeth. The flush handle on the toilet also usually harbours lots of faecal germs – and tends to be overlooked during cleaning. Tiles on the floor, in particular around the toilet, and joints are also sensitive areas. Clean particularly germ-prone areas of the bathroom regularly using a soft cleaning cloth and diluted vinegar. The acid content acts reliably against bacteria, and the product also preserves the material.

Antibacterial surfaces are extremely helpful in ensuring optimum hygiene in the bathroom. While a completely germ-free surface is almost impossible to achieve, a special surface finish such as Villeroy & Boch’s AntiBac can reduce the spread of bacteria by up to 99.9 per cent. However, regular cleaning of particularly vulnerable areas in the bathroom using vinegar or an all-purpose cleaner is still important to keep the bathroom clean for optimum well-being.
